(via Mark Ramsey, que avisa: This process will get dramatically easier and more widespread within the next 24 months, regardless of the development of WiMax (and that's another post, coming soon).
Rádios dos EUA aderem ao iTunes (HD)
«CBS Radio, Clear Channel, Cumulus, Cox, Entercom and Greater Media formally announced they are in the process of installing iTunes Tagging technology. We had previously reported Clear Channel had begun adapting its automation system in all stations broadcasting in HD-R to prepare for tagging and that other Alliance member groups were discussing licensing agreements with Apple so that they too, could support iTunes tagging. With tagging, consumers who hear a song on their HD Radio stations — and want to preview, buy and download it later on iTunes — will be able to do so by touch a “tagging” button on an enabled HD Radio receiver. Two receiver makers, Polk and JBL, said they would soon have such receivers on the market.»

«Listeners don't care how accessible radio is. Listeners don't care that it's ubiquitous. Listeners don't care that radio has towers, spectrum, transmitters, contours, satellites, repeaters, buffers or anything for that matter. Telling the listener about distribution means nothing. Because they don't care. What listeners care about is content. They want to turn on a device - be it a radio, a satellite radio, an iPod, their cellphone, whatever - and listen to something on their drive to work. Or hear something in the background while working on the job site. Or rev them up while they're cranking away behind a computer at work. Or laugh during the drive home after a crazy day at work. Rehr concluded by saying that Radio 2020 will, "give ammunition to radio's loyalists" as they respond to industry critics. He told NAB Radio Show attendees, "We need you to be evangelical about Radio 2020 and talk to as many people as possible. Repeat it to yourself, to your colleagues, and to your family." How about this? How about instead of drinking the NAB Kool-aid, and repeating "2020 2020 2020" to everyone in some cult-mania mantra... why not just do it instead? If "Radio 2020" is going to be some revolution in radio - which, let's face it, is a direct response to the fragmenting of media from satellite radio, internet radio, iPods, mobile audio, etc - then start acting on it, and stop talking about it. If broadcast TV stations can survive cable (and even thrive amid 600 other channels), then radio can too... they just need to give a reason to do so» (fonte: «Radio 2020, and the future of "radio" Orbicast, September 28, 2007
Importantes desenvolvimentos do WiMax (EUA)
«Last week in Chicago, Sprint hosted a river boat tour for a group of technology journalists and industry insiders designed to show off its newest project: WiMax wireless technology. The product, dubbed "Xohm: WiMax from Sprint", showcased the potential of the new wireless technology, which uses high-power antennas to transmit wireless signals over much larger distances than a traditional Wi-Fi system. Guests were encouraged to use the variety of devices on board, from laptops to cell phones, over the wireless network set up by Sprint around Chicago's downtown area. (...) According to Ars Technica, the Xohm network is slated for a full launch in Chicago, Baltimore and Washington D.C. by March or April 2008. Sprint plans to follow the launch with a nationwide rollout, and should reach all major markets in the U.S. by the end of 2008»
«U.S. auto buyers, however, won't have to wait until next year to get wireless Internet access on-the-go. The Ford Sync system, developed in tandem with Microsoft, is landing in an increasing number of 2008 models, and as this video shows off, delivers a simple Internet radio solution to consumers via the Sync system.
For a technology like broadcast radio that has enjoyed "ubiquity" for decades in cars, homes, and every other place radio waves reach, the advent of universal wireless Internet access should be seen as a healthy chance to expand their businesses to a new medium. These two developments reflect the booming consumer demand for Internet in the everywhere and all-the-time varieties. Like panelists and experts repeatedly pointed out at the NAB Radio Show, broadcasters would be smart to give the people what they want.»

Um rádio wi-fi. Para o carro?
«Radio is dead, right? Not according to a little company called Phoenix. These guys brought their A game to the Digital Life convention today, showcasing a line of Wi-Fi radios and wireless speakers that look and sound good enough to compete with the big boys….almost. The Com one Wi-Fi radio sports an integrated W-LAN chip that automatically detects and connects to existing wireless access points. Once connected, it allows you to search for and listen to any number of currently available Internet radio stations. The on board LCD displays relevant track information, and there are 8 programmable favorites buttons that allow you to key in your 8 favorite stations. Very convenient. It’s a solidly built unit, and the built-in speakers sounded okay, but we wish they had either scrapped them entirely, or settled on a more sophisticated pair. Oh well. That said, there is a line out jack allowing you to connect and interface with external speakers of your choice. At the end of the day, this is a cool little unit, but Phoenix has a bit of work to do before they can step to the likes of Tivoli and others. Another shot after the break!»?

«(...)key initiatives to the 'Radio 2020' campaign were outlined including:Accessible technology. Technology adoption is the lifeblood of any medium, but is even more vital for radio, given its image as universally accessible.
Playlist variety and format diversity. A primary strength of radio is the wide variety of entertainment, news and programming that is readily available and free for listeners. Through their HD multicast channels, radio stations can strengthen their programming diversity further.
Building for the future. There are numerous initiatives that the radio business can spearhead to ensure consumers continue to demand radio -- including encouraging more variety and diversity on radio, spurring more innovation in the electronics industry and helping marketers enhance the quality of their advertising.
Reigniting consumers. While 92 percent of listeners acknowledge radio plays an important role in American life, it is too often taken for granted. Radio 2020 will include a thorough branding and marketing campaign to remind the public of the many benefits served by radio».
Mark Ramsey contesta a afirmação de David Rehr, presidente da NAB: "We must remind the public why they value radio to reignite their passion for it.". O que diz Ramsey: «We cannot convince or remind them of anything. We can prove. We can do. We can innovate. We can delight. We can surprise. We can change. We can be bold. We can invest. We can try. We can put our actions where our mouths are and stop trying to manipulate our audiences into thinking the way we wish they did. We can stop talking to ourselves and start listening to the audience. They are voting with their ears»
«Radio stations - and radio companies - that move their websites from just being flashy, one-dimensional billboards to truly interactive meeting places can benefit greatly in the next few years. Boomers may have learned all about computers in the workplace, but many now regard the Internet as being integral parts of their lives. As they share photos, concert stories, and life experiences with friends and family, radio can and should be a facilitator in making it happen.»

«Young people's opinion of radio -- top-of-mind for Radio Show attendees -- was particularly illuminating. There's a "deep dive" session scheduled for Thursday, but the initial presentation showed that radio is not prevalent in young people's homes. Rather, in-car is the primary location for radio listening, with iPods beginning to encroach. It was clear that some young people still use and love radio, but there are many lessons for radio broadcasters to learn from how 18-28-year-olds use media on the whole»

Um empurrão para a rádio HD (EUA)
«HD Radio is now available nationwide as a dealer-installed option on nearly every 2008 Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicle, making Ford Motor Co. the first U.S. automaker to commit to HD Radio. Dealers are also offering HD installation in most used and currently owned 2005, 2006, and 2007 vehicles.
"Drivers have always had a love affair with their car radios," said Kim Irwin, Manager/Vehicle Personalization & Accessories for Ford's Customer Service Division. "HD Radio offers our dealers a triple threat: It differentiates their offerings from other brands, it lets them upgrade customer entertainment systems in a unique way, and it lets buyers of recent pre-owned vehicles, as well as current vehicle owners, share completely in the benefits. This is the kind of program that our dealers love to see."
Ford will support the HD Radio launch with a 13-week, multimillion-dollar radio campaign in partnership with the HD Radio Digital Alliance. The commercials are set to start airing September 26 on about 700 radio stations in 100 markets.
BMW in 2005 began offering HD Radio as a factory-installed option with its 2006 model-year vehicles.»

DAB atinge metade dos britânicos em 2010
«Half the UK population will have access to to DAB digital radio in two and a half years time. That's the news from the Digital Radio Development Bureau, with a 58% penetration expected by 2011.
The DRDB’s new five-year forecast puts household penetration at 21% by the end of 2007, and 30% by the end of 2008, rising to 40% in 2009, 50% in 2010, and 58.5% by the end of 2011.
DAB digital radio set sales are expected to realise 17% growth in 2007, with more than two million units sold at a value of £170 million. Growth rises to 26% in 2008 with 2.6 million units sold at a value of £200 million. This delivers a cumulative forecast of approximately 9.2 million products sold by the end of 2008, with DAB products commanding 28% of the overall market by volume and 35% by value in 2008.
There are indications from many sources – Rajar, Ofcom, BBC, RadioCentre – that the traditional face of radio listening is changing. This is impacting significantly on the overall radio set sales market (analogue and DAB) with certain form factors, such as boomboxes, audio systems and personals, in decline, while others, such as MP3 players and docking stations (with radio included) are on the rise.
Says DRDB chief executive, Ian Dickens: “Already we are starting to see DAB digital radio appear in some of these new form factors, and while it is important to continue to see successful growth in traditional radio products, DAB’s longer-term future lies in the penetration of these new products, along with in-car and mobile phones. Over the coming months, the DRDB will be changing its shape and focus to ensure that radio moves swiftly down this road.”»

O excesso de informação na net
«Many respondents reported they feel in danger of losing themselves amidst the wealth of information available on the web. In the face of large amounts of informatio, participants want to step back and remind themselves of what their own opinions really are» (McMillan e Morrison, 2006: 91)
