Transistor kills the radio star?

«When asked yesterday, at the Lehman Worldwide Wireless, Wireline and Media Conference about a potential merger between his company and XM, Sirius EVP/CFO David Frear said he thought it would “make sense from an economic standpoint.” He added, however, that he couldn’t predict what government regulators would have to say to the hypothetical merger»

fonte: radio ink, 24/5/06, http://www.radioink.com/headlineentry.asp?hid=133679&pt=inkheadlines

Sobre a hipotética fusão:

«NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. (SIRI) thinks it could make sense to merge with rival XM Satellite Radio Inc. (XMSR) but isn't so sure regulators would approve such a deal.

Speaking at an investor conference organized by Morgan Stanley Wednesday, Chief Financial Officer David Frear said putting the two satellite radio companies together would create better a return for shareholders. It makes economic sense, but "whether or not that's feasible from a public policy perspective" is unclear, he said, according a transcript of his comments.
Chatter about possible talks between the two companies has circulated for months. Sirius and XM are currently the only two satellite radio providers in the U.S. In order for regulators to approve such a deal, the two would have to be considered part of a broader industry with other competitors»

Rádios on line nos quartos do Península

«A young Cambridge company developing modules for internet radios has signed a breakthrough deal which will see its technology included in the suites of some of the most luxurious hotels in the world. Reciva has entered into an agreement with The Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels, owner and operator of The Peninsula Hotels, to introduce Reciva internet radio products into the company’s hotels. Installation of customised radios will begin with selected suites in The Peninsula New York and The Peninsula Chicago, followed by all guestrooms and suites at The Peninsula Tokyo, which is scheduled to open in 2007. Reciva’s technology uses Wi-Fi to connect to the thousands of radio stations broadcasting over the internet. A content browser on Reciva radios allows users to navigate live and on-demand broadcast radio by country and genre to select radio stations from anywhere in the world»

«RBR observation: Is it all over? Has PPM won? Not necessarily. CBS is a big fish, but Clear Channel is even bigger in radio. Should the remaining members of the Next-Gen group disagree with CBS and select the Media Audit/Ipsos entry for radio ratings, CBS would eventually have to go along. Arbitron's PPM is dependent on broadcasters encoding, leaving gaps where stations refuse to do so - as Cox and Radio One have demonstrated in Houston. One of the attractions of the Media Audit/Ipsos system is that it prefers encoding, but still produces ratings via sound-matching for stations that refuse to encode. We hear that a handful of other significant group owners, including some Next-Gen members, are considering signing PPM agreements as CBS has done. But the opera ain't over until the fat lady sings - and the fat lady lives in San Antonio.»

PPM vai medir audiências em Londres

«Arbitron on Monday announced that global market information group TNS has inked a two-year deal to use Arbitron's Portable People Meter to collect both radio and television audience data in London. TNS already uses the PPM to collect audience data in several markets worldwide.

The United Kingdom's radio ratings provider RAJAR has partnered with BARB – the UK's official television measurement body - in commissioning the joint study.

The study will measure over 50 national and local television and radio stations across four platforms: analog, digital radio and television, and the Internet. The TNS panel will operate in parallel to RAJAR's current ratings system, but will not be integrated into those results.»

fonte: «Arbitron's PPM Set For London Panel», 22/05/06 Radio Ink

DN 23/5/06, http://dn.sapo.pt/2006/05/23/media/audimetros_portateis_2007.html

Podcasting significa o fim da rádio?

«Does podcasting therefore spell the end of radio? “I don't really buy into that per se; what we're really seeing is a big mash-up of stuff,” says Mr Curry, the podfather. Podcasting, terrestrial radio and another newcomer, paid-for (ie, mostly advertising-free) satellite radio, are all carving out their niches in people's crowded media lives. The limiting factor of podcasting, says Mr Curry, is that it is “inherently asynchronous” (ie, not live). “If they find Osama bin Laden, don't go running to your iPod,” he adds. Breaking news, call-in shows (an old-fashioned form of participatory media) and other live programming will still work on terrestrial radio».

«In his monthly Internet column, Greater Media CEO Peter Smyth urged the radio industry to stop fighting the onslaught of new media devices that are capturing consumers' attention, and instead utilize radio's strengths to capitalize on the changing landscape.

"As an industry, we need to stop playing defense with this technology, and use it to our advantage," said Smyth in his "From The Corner Office" column. "We are moving in the right direction with streaming, podcasting, digital music stores, e-commerce and database marketing, but we still have a ways to go."

Smyth continued, "In the future, I see radio as the premiere content provider and us emerging as the leader in the audio entertainment business. Our role will be to provide compelling content- whether it’s coming from our towers, our streams, our multicast channels, or our podcasts. I see a convergence of all of these services with radio as the ultimate source and the primary content provider."

He added, "Radio’s biggest strength is its ability to provide local, entertaining and compelling content to consumers- that’s where radio will stand out. With iPods, the Internet, satellite and the many other types of new technology available to consumers, radio can truly distinguish itself from the pack by doing what it does best- taking care of the communities it serves on a local level."»

FM Extra - mais uma inovação?

«Milpitas, CA - Apr 14, 2006 - The Idea Bank consortium of broadcasters has selected DRE's FM Extra digital subcarrier system as part of its digital radio strategy. The Idea Bank consortium represents nearly 500 radio stations across the United States and meets twice a year to discuss issues that affect the future of radio. At the group's Atlanta meeting in April, it announced that the group plans to initially convert 80 stations to FM Extra this year. Over-the-air FM Extra broadcasting was displayed at the meeting from WREC-FM 91.1 in Atlanta with two digital channels of stereo audio simultaneously with the primary stereo analog channel and RBDS.

DRE states that FM Extra can be used with HD Radio transmissions to provide even more digital channels to listeners. DRE also states that DRE-capable production receivers will be available by the end of June 2006.»

«The panel also featured audience participation that displayed the type of innovation typical of the Internet radio ad landscape. Spacial Audio's Rockie Thomas, a moderator from an earlier panel, argued that Webcasters have "basically been approaching [advertising] too much like a terrestrial product" with ad spots that are too long for the Net radio audience»

Internet radio (Podcasts, satellite radio, mashups and downloads, mp3, p2p, wma, burning, ripping, streaming. So many busy new music activities and listening methods, and none of it coming from the good old fashioned radio. What's a poor broadcaster to do?  If radio is dying, what do we need to know about what's replacing it? "Soma FM started because I couldn't find a station that played music that I liked," claims Rusty Hodge, the program director of internet radio station Soma FM. One of the most popular of the thousands of internet stations broadcasting online, Soma FM offers listeners a choice of seven unique radio stations)

Podcasting (Other musicians are finding ways to reach out to their fans directly. Michael Butler started sending out his band's music to fans across the world in a podcast. (see glossary) It evolved into The Rock and Roll Geek Show, a weekly podcast all about the latest rock/metal music from independent artists)

Satellite radio (Canada's newest satellite radio project, XM Satellite Radio is hoping to find listeners who will actually pay for their service.  Satellite radio offers one hundred channels of digital quality music, sports, entertainment, news and information that's completely mobile. You can listen to it in your home, your car or at the park)
Digital radio (CHUM FM thinks the future is in digital radio. "DAB Radio is the next level of radio. It delivers CD quality sound and it also gives radio the opportunity to stream information back and forth," says Farina. And he points out that CHUM FM is still the most listened to fm radio station in Canada)

Music to the masses (Ralph Simon, Chairman of the Mobile Entertainment Forum says people's listening habits have changed. "People don't want to be tethered in front of a computer to get their music download. They want immediacy. They want it now. They want to be able to experience something because a part of this whole new music world is, it's called a "show me" culture.")

KCRW: Trying it all (KCRW is a traditional radio station, 89.9 on the dial in Los Angeles, that offers all the alternatives - podcasting, streaming, downloading, simulcasts, video, music sales - as well. And it's working. Subscribers are paying to listen from every U.S. state and around the world)

O HD continua a despertar dúvidas

«Silicon Valley has the highest percentage of high-tech gadgetheads in the United States, and they have oodles of disposable income.  But there seems to be absolutely no consumer interest in IBOC/HD radio among those gadgetheads.

The linked article above repeats a common mistake made by IBOC/HD boosters; it assumes the lack of IBOC/HD receivers in retail stores is somehow the fault of the stores. The possibility that IBOC/HD is simply not attractive to consumers, and therefore retailers,  is never considered-----the ramifications of that possibility are just too awful for IBOC/HD supporters to contemplate.

Even Radio World, long a reliable booster of IBOC/HD, is starting to panic a little bit.  There is a forced attempt to be hip by describing IBOC/HD radio as "the bling of terrestrial radio," but the article once again treats IBOC/HD as a technical issue instead of grasping it is compelling content----or lack of it----that will determine the fate of IBOC/HD.

People are also starting to recognize the interference problems caused by IBOC/HD might be greater than previously supposed; the Corporation for Public broadcasting is seeking participants for a study of IBOC/HD interference (thanks to Glenn Hauser and his World of Radio site for this info).»

O PPM vai alterar as programações?

Parece que não...

«"We've heard a lot of discussion about how stations should do things differently to succeed in 'a PPM world,'" said Coleman. "Our belief, based on both years of experience and extensive analysis of PPM data, is that the things that have always made great stations successful will continue to do so when PPM data becomes the ratings currency."

Dunkin added, "If radio programmers can view their stations from the outside like listeners do - and understand that listeners do not care, are not paying attention, have extremely simplistic perceptions and attitudes about radio and listen for instantaneous need fulfillment - and program and brand their stations accordingly, their chances of achieving ratings success under the PPM system will be bolstered significantly."

But today, with high definition, podcasting, online streaming, hand-held devices and the word "digital" attached to so many platforms, defining the radio medium has become an arduous task. And with a technological roller coaster constantly reinventing the way consumers hear music, news and entertainment, determining where radio is going is an even tougher call»

Algumas citações:

«No matter how shiny and hip the new audio platforms, broadcasters must hold content above all else, our pundits stressed»

«"The best appliance ever created for dispensing music to date is the iPod, but the best appliance for delivering companionship and fun remains the radio»

«"we need to start thinking of radio as audio entertainment. We're at a crossroads where the delivery system is going to change, whether that means a cell phone, some other wireless device or something that hasn't even been invented yet. The future of radio is going to be more about the product than how it is delivered»

«we have to give the listener opportunities to feel that they have some control over what we do. Listeners need to know they make a difference."»

«"Our latest estimate is that a total of 1.1 million (8.4 percent) of Stern's terrestrial fan base has migrated to Sirius," the research group noted. "As Bridge Ratings continues to interview former Stern listeners, there is an apparent apathy regarding future Sirius subscriptions." The company surveyed a total of 3,200 terrestrial Stern listeners, and found that many were simply not motivated enough to make the switch from the free, terrestrial dial»
