Transistor kills the radio star?

«During a five-day meeting in Geneva of the U.N. World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights, an unlikely coalition of delegates from developing nations and technology organizations such as Intel and the U.S. Telecom Association voiced strong objections to treaty provisions covering webcasting and "simulcasting" over broadcast or cable networks and computer networks»

O HD em vários partes do mundo

Por inicaitiva da Broadcast Electronics:

  • Puerto Rico: WPRM-FM, owned by Uno Radio Group, became the first station in Puerto Rico to adopt HD Radio in April 2005, using a BE FMI 31 HD Radio transmitter system into a separate antenna. San Juan, Puerto Rico, ranks as market 13 by Arbitron and is a highly saturated radio market with more than 120 radio stations in the area. This is the first reported HD Radio installation in the region, sparking interest in HD Radio in the Caribbean and Latin America.
  • Brazil: KISS-FM in Sao Paulo went on the air with HD Radio on Sept. 17, 2005, becoming the first station to transmit FM HD Radio in Brazil. The station is using BE’s FMI 73 transmitter package into a separate antenna.
  • New Zealand: On October 19, 2005, a BE HD Radio system delivered the first HD Radio signals heard in New Zealand. Transmitting on 106.1MHz from the Skytower in Auckland, the broadcast is under a special demonstration license from the Radio Spectrum Management division of the New Zealand Ministry of Economic Development.
  • Philippines: Philippines President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo officiated HD Radio broadcasts in Baguio City on Nov. 9, after BE turned on the country’s first HD Radio station during a conference there.
  • France: Towercast, in partnership with independent broadcast syndicate SIRTI and NRJ Group, began broadcasting an HD Radio signal on 88.2MHz there in March 2006, using a BE low-powered transmission system. In the next phase of the trials, Towercast plans to multicast two or more channels of programming.
  • Thailand: In yet another digital radio first, BE installed an HD Radio system for a public radio network targeting mass transit commuters in Bangkok. The system was acquired by RNT Television, which has a contract to broadcast to buses in Thailand using a portion of existing licensed FM frequencies.
  • Indonesia: In April 2006, BE delivered the first AM HD Radio system in Asia. AM HD Radio went on the air in Surabaya, Indonesia, on 1,062kHz using a BE AM 10A transmitter.
  • Indonesia: Also in April, BE installed HD Radio FM on JDFI-FM 101.8MHz, part of the Prambors Radio Group in Jakarta.

New Musical Express vai ter canal de música

«From Digital Music News: "Mercora will soon power a new online radio offering from NME.com, part of a deal announced Tuesday. NME.com,  a Time Warner Inc. company, will deliver a beta version of its MyNME Radio service  at the end of this quarter. The UK-based offering will tap into a Mercora architecture that resembles a streaming P2P file-sharing service. Mercora allows users to stream the personal collections of various members, and listeners can search for user-generated stations that contain specific content.

"Record labels have eyed Mercora suspiciously, especially given its close affinity to P2P-style sharing... Meanwhile, the NME deal is likely to expand the concept audience considerably... Kevin Heery, director of Digital Development at Time Warner subsidiary IPC Ignite, [said], 'our partnership with Mercora will provide this community with the ultimate music social network experience.'"

Will licensing kill the radio star? New rules on royalties are stifling British internet radio stations while allowing foreign rivals to broadcast into the UK unhindered», Guardian Unlimited, Wendy M. Grossman, May 4, 2006.

«“WFAN, WSCR and WIP are among CBS Radio’s most listened to stations in the country and we recognize that in today’s fast paced world, our listeners need immediate access and alternate ways to hear live broadcasts and news about their favorite sports teams,” commented Joel Hollander, chairman and CEO, CBS Radio. “CBS Radio seeks to partner with companies that will enhance the listener experience and we’re thrilled our stations will be offered through mSpot Sports service.”» (http://www.radioink.com/headlineentry.asp?hid=133387&pt=inkheadlines).

«“It’s basically what you have in your car radio, with a 30-second delay,” said Daren Tsui, MSpot CEO» (http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/interactive/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001807316)

«Attempts by Sony to lure customers away from the iPod have so far been disappointing. By now, the story is a tired one. Sony’s lineup of Network Walkman portable MP3 players have failed to put a dent in the dominant iPod, and Sony Connect has mostly been met with lukewarm reviews and consumer indifference. But despite the setbacks, the company is keeping its head in the portable MP3 game. Last week, Sony SVP Takao Yuhura met with the press to announce the arrival the next iPod killer, as well as a new download service to replace Connect. Unfortunately, Yuhura offered no details on the upcoming player/service pairing, leaving pundits wondering whether Sony will be more competitive this time around. Meanwhile, one executive close to the situation told Digital Music News that a new lineup of players will not carry ATRAC-3 compatibility, though that information has not been corroborated by additional sources.

So what will the next generation of digital music services look like for Sony? A possible clue may come from another Sony service called LocationFree TV, which allows PlayStation Portable (PSP) owners to receive television programming and other content wirelessly and on-the-road, all from a home-based unit. Like the SlingBox from Sling Media, the concept is all about content ubiquity and portability, and Sony could expand the platform to include portable MP3 players. Meanwhile, Yuhura was vague on when the new players would appear, only indicating that they will go on sale sometime next year.»

    Starbucks vende música

«Starbucks has masterfully created a winning consumer experience, and that thinking has guided its entry into music. The company has already featured CDs from a number of developing and superstar artists, including Antigone Rising, Bob Dylan, Herbie Hancock, and The Rolling Stones. But according to Starbucks Entertainment president Ken Lombard, the end game has nothing to do with selling music. "We are not going to be a music company, and we are not going to change who we are," Lombard said during a MusEXPO keynote address on Monday in Los Angeles. "We are continuing to figure out how to create a world-class experience for our customers," Lombard noted.

Regardless of where the value play is, the company is clearly pushing an involved music agenda. Part of the opportunity, according to Lombard, lies in an alienated consumer that still craves great music. "We are connecting with customers that no longer have a music experience," Lombard said, who pointed to a "disenfranchised consumer". That means stepping outside of mainstream hits, and allowing for greater music discovery. "Ours is a focus that goes beyond the top 40, and we are digging deep to try to find good music," he said.

    O impacto do PPM (mitos...)

«“Our belief, based on both years of experience and extensive analysis of PPM data, is that the things that have always made great stations successful will continue to do so when PPM data becomes the ratings currency.”»

«“Radio stations will have a lot more success under PPM if they spend less time thinking about how to game the system and more time developing compelling programming and building strong brands.”»

«According to a national [Inglaterra] survey from independent research agency, BMRB, latest figures suggest that over 10% of the adult population have downloaded a podcast in the last 6 months and figures will continue to grow.
Among adult internet users, 17% have downloaded a “podcast” in the last 6 months (rising to 28% among 16-24 year olds) and 24% are likely to download a podcast in the next 6 months.
“The findings suggest that up to 7.9 million adults could be downloading podcasts in the next 6 months, which represents a massive opportunity for advertisers and media owners alike,” said BMRB marketing director Steve Cooke.»

«Restricted Service Licences (RSLs) are issued under the Broadcasting Act on FM and AM to provide radio services within a particular establishment (long-term – up to five years), such as a university campus or hospital, or during an event (short-term - typically 28 days), such as Ramadan. Almost 500 short-term RSLs were granted in 2005, while 128 long-term licences have been issued. RSLs provide an inexpensive means for non-professional broadcasters to reach their audiences; licences are issued on a first come, first served basis but include certain restrictions as a result.

    Ofcom is proposing:

    • to allow commercial organisations, such as shopping centres and theme parks, to apply for long-term RSLs;
    • to reduce restrictions on issuing short-term RSLs in a location where a commercial or community radio licence has been granted or where it is being advertised; and
    • to issue long-term RSLs for periods of less than five years upon request (...)»
