Transistor kills the radio star?

«More radio stations do not necessarily bring about more choice for listeners and sometimes the only way to distinguish between one station and another is the station ident (the jingle that identifies the station with its name and frequency). The majority of stations in Britain follow a very similar format dominated by music" (Fleming, 2002: 6).

«How will people listen to the radio in 2015? That’s the question that a group of academics put to more than 40 media ‘experts’ in Canada, Denmark, Finland, Ireland and the UK.»

- a resposta à pergunta dos especialistas do DRACE diz-nos que «by 2015 most Europeans would have digital terrestrial radio» e que «FM radio will continue to play a significant role in both Europe and Canada», e isto porque « This is attributed to the strengths of linear radio, including mobility, ease of access and localism, as well as powerful journalistic and artistic content». Não penso que assim vá ser. Para mim será mais «an increase in personalized and on-demand radio, with more listener sovereignty, personalization options and the gradual disappearance of schedules. Radio will be available when and where listeners want it»

O iPhone revoluciona a forma de ouvir rádio?

«The new Apple 3G iPhone has received a lot of attention, but the more important story isn't the new hardware, but Apple's application store and the many programs that run on the new phone.
Thanks to a few of those programs there's an even larger story - the iPhone may fundamentally change the way people listen to the radio when they're in their cars or otherwise on the go.
Two free applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch, and another program that costs only $4.99, make it possible to listen to live radio on the iPhone from anywhere, including a moving car
(...) with the iPhone you can listen to stations from around the world, including some that broadcast only on the Internet and don't even have transmitters.
Over time, this could be as disruptive to the radio broadcast industry as the Web has been to print. (...) it does mean they will face competition from new players, including startups operating from peoples' spare rooms.
There are at least three "live radio" software applications available, not only for the new iPhone, but for the older iPhone and the iPod Touch that have been updated with Apple's new 2.0 software (free for iPhone users and $10 for iPod Touch users). Two of the programs: AOL Radio and Pandora are free while Tuner costs $4.99.
AOL Radio "Powered by CBS Radio" allows you to listen to more than 150 CBS music, news, talk and sports stations across the United States, as well as customized stations created specifically for online listening. By default, it uses the iPhone or iPod Touch's location awareness capabilities to play stations in your area, but you can also use it for out-of-town stations»

transmitir além do limite do espectro licenciado.

«The Yahoo! Music Store, along with the ability to purchase and download single songs and albums, will no longer be available as of September 30, 2008.

Songs and albums that were purchased through the Yahoo! Music Unlimited Store are protected by a digital rights management system that requires a valid license key before they can be played on your computer.

After the Store closes, Yahoo! will no longer be able to support the retrieval of license keys for music purchased from Yahoo! Music Unlimited, and Yahoo! will no longer be able to authorize song playback on additional computers.

After September 30, 2008, you will not be able to transfer songs to unauthorized computers or re-license these songs after changing operating systems. Please note that your purchased tracks will generally continue to play on your existing authorized computers unless there is a change to the computer's operating system.

Stay tuned! While the Yahoo! Music Unlimited Store will no longer be available, Yahoo! Music has partnered with Rhapsody so you can still purchase your favorite tracks. Plus,
Yahoo! Music will continue to offer users a complete online music experience with the largest collection of music videos, Internet radio, exclusive artist features, music news, and more! »

O consumo activo

«Quoting the famous phrase by Marshall McLuhan "the medium is the
message" [1], today one may say that the network is the message of the
medium Internet. The networking phenomenon was anticipated by the
practice of mail art long before Internet evolved, just as the
pointillism of Seurat could be considered prophetic with respect to the
subsequent development of the television image. Until recently in
America the term network was used to describe the television medium, but
today it regards a much larger and vaster connective dimension, which is
the Internet. Network becomes "the net of social relations", it is the
message transmitted by the Internet medium, which is in turn the net
which technically permits transmission.

The net of relations represents the message of the technical net. If the
medium conditions the message (though converging on the Internet, TV,
books, radio, telephones, cell phones do transmit specific messages), on
the internet (a medium based on the creation of connection nets), the
message is the social relationships all these media generate.

All this leads to the role of the user. McLuhan often jested that "If
the medium is the message, then the user is the content". What he
implied, I think, is that media were not just support or even
conditioners of messages, they were prime and foremost environments. The
medium thus could shape both the content and the user. If the medium
conditions the message, the user becomes the content of this message,
and this goes for all the forms of networking. With the extension of the
Internet, one's position within the flow of information changes: today
the net allows us to diffuse our thoughts in a global manner; whereas
before these affirmations were merely an utopia, now one may experiment
with them as a concrete phenomenon. Once on-line we quite literally
become content for the Internet.

The structure of the medium also conditions one's perception of one's
own identity: the fact that one becomes an active lever in the
distribution and creation of digital contents also determines a change
in the net structures and in our way of communicating and relating with
the outside world. People carry an aura of communications around them.
In the case of TV, television images speak directly to the body of the
viewer. Television addresses one's inner state and the electron beam
paints its sensorial and emotional dimensions directly unto the viewer's
nervous system; it is a form of physical action which is conveyed
through sound and moving images. But with the Internet, we share the
responsibility of making sense with the technology; we are not just
consumers of information, but also producers, creators, and our
production becomes an active part of network dynamics. Just check this

Definição de Beatriz Santana em “Introducing the Technophobia/Technophilia Debate: Some Comments on the Information Age”, June 1997, UCLA Departament of Education. LIMA 9
