Australian Industry Points to True Kazaa Owner

Just who controls Kazaa-owner Sharman Networks? The company is a shadowy one, with off-shore ownership and secretive practices the norm. That has prompted the Australian recording industry to heavily monitor the company, including intense surveillance of the residence of Sharman CEO Nikki Hemming. The surveillance has been conducted by Music Industry Piracy Investigations (MIPI), the enforcement arm of the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). Now, MIPI representative Michael Speck has pegged Hemming herself as the true controller of the various Sharman properties, with Altnet CEO Kevin Bermeister believed to control the actual Kazaa application. That information came out as part of an ongoing legal battle between Australian major labels and the massive P2P application, with deliberations resuming June 8th.
The surveillance has not been limited to just Hemming, with other locations also falling under the MIPI eye. That is part of a continued effort to clearly define the enemy, and determine just what level of control Sharman has over the FastTrack file-sharing network. While Hemming and others have continuously maintained that they have no control over the network, major labels have asserted otherwise. Now, Hemming may have to take the stand, with the CEO potentially shedding light on a mysterious and complicated ownership structure.
