Yes, I have a very nice iPod with all my favorite songs that I frequently use while working out, and during long walks/runs. But like many of you, I also like the option of listening to the radio - whether it's checking out what my clients are doing, tuning in the competition, or spending time with NPR and various play-by-play sports. And my iPod won't let me do that. But the Zune will, and the reviews of this next generation device are actually pretty damn good. Microsoft has made the inevitable improvements, and some of the features of the Zune mean nothing to me (how am I going to find other Zune owners to share music with?), but I would like an FM tuner. I'm not alone. Our Tech Poll last year revealed the top feature that Apple iPod owners want on their next player is an FM radio: So why shouldn't I have an iPod-like device that has a great-sounding built-in FM tuner? In spite of the obvious decreases, we know that the top source for music discovery is still FM radio. That's how many people still get turned onto the music they ultimately buy on iTunes. So why would Steve Jobs allow me to move away from the iPod family? And why would he allow Microsoft to get a leg up in a market where he owns the category killer? I don't know, but I'm tired of waiting. I'm thinking Zune.», fonte: Dark Side of the Zune 29/05/2007O primeiro milhão do Zune«Microsoft has now sold one million Zunes, an early benchmark that comes one month ahead of schedule. The accomplishment is somewhat unspectacular, though Microsoft quickly assumed a modest growth forecast following a soft initial reception last fall. "It's a good start. It's not an overwhelming start," said Robbie Bach, president of Entertainment and Devices at Microsoft in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle. "I'm not going to pretend it's some gigantic move." Meanwhile, Microsoft is investing more capital and brainpower into the development of the player. Just recently, the company attempted to perk the marketplace by introducing a pink Zune, a precursor to broader model updates. Microsoft is also pushing a strategy that will allow more control over its Chinese production. Comparisons to the iPod are unavoidable, and incredibly lopsided. Since launching in 2001, Apple has shifted more than 100 million iPods, and the device has captured the imagination of consumers. That makes a competitive entrance incredibly tricky, though Microsoft is betting that the market will continue to expand. Meanwhile, all eyes are shifting towards the iPhone, a device that carries all the signs of another Apple smash. The iPhone will undoubtedly alter the playing field for mobile-based music, though it remains unclear if Apple will translate its dominance in stand-alone MP3 players into converged phones. Microsoft has not disclosed plans to unveil a converged mobile device, though it does distribute mobile-based operating systems. It solves the worst problem that plagued earlier Microsoft-based music players -- frequent failures to synchronize properly music and videos between the players and personal computers. Synchronization on the Zune is smooth and sure. Also, the Zune player and software have a very good user interface, different from, but in some cases easier to use than, the iPod's. While it lacks the famous iPod scroll wheel, instead using a common four-way navigation pad, I found song lists easy to navigate on the Zune. It has only a few buttons and is quite intuitive to use. To my ears, it sounded as good as the iPod. But, this first Zune has too many compromises and missing features to be as good a choice as the iPod for most users. The hardware feels rushed and incomplete. It is 60% larger and 17% heavier than the comparable iPod. It has much worse battery life for music than the iPod or than Microsoft claims -- at least two hours less than the iPod's, in my tests. Despite the larger screen, many album covers look worse than they do on the iPod. And you can't share music libraries between computers like you can with iTunes. Zune's online store offers far fewer songs, just over two million, compared with 3.5 million for the iTunes store. In fact, as of this writing, songs from one of the big labels, Universal, were missing from Zune Marketplace, though Microsoft says it is confident it will have all the major labels when it launches Zune on Tuesday. Also, despite the player's capability, Zune Marketplace offers none of the TV shows, movies or music videos that iTunes does, and has no audiobooks or podcasts. Even worse, to buy even a single 99-cent song from the Zune store, you have to purchase blocks of "points" from Microsoft, in increments of at least $5. You can't just click and have the 99 cents deducted from a credit card, as you can with iTunes. You must first add points to your account, then buy songs with these points. So, even if you are buying only one song, you have to allow Microsoft, one of the world's richest companies, to hold on to at least $4.01 of your money until you buy another. And the point system is deceptive. Songs are priced at 79 points, which some people might think means 79 cents. But 79 points actually cost 99 cents.» fonte: «Microsoft's Zune Challenges iPod» By Walter S. Mossberg, 9/11/06 25/11/2006 06:27 Autor: osegundochoque. Enlace permanente. Enlace permanente. Microsoft said yesterday that its Zune player, which it plans to release in time for the holiday season, will include wireless technology to allow Zune owners to share their favorite songs and playlists with one another easily. The company hopes the Zune will help it upstage Apple Computer in the digital music market. “With Zune, we are not simply delivering a portable device,” said J Allard, vice president for design and development at Microsoft. “We are introducing a new platform that helps bring artists closer to their audiences and helps people find new music and develop new social connections.” Yesterday was the first time the company had shown off the device publicly since reports about it began to trickle out in the spring. With the Zune, Microsoft said, users will be able to wirelessly send other Zune owners a full-length song, which the recipient can listen to three times within a three-day period. After that, the recipient will need to buy the song to play it again. By focusing on the sharing of music, Microsoft hopes to differentiate its device from the industry-leading iPod, which has no wireless or sharing features. Bryan Lee, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s entertainment business, said in an interview that the company saw digital music sharing as an extension of other social technologies like MySpace and XBox Live, Microsoft’s online game technology that connects players with one another. “It turns people into street teams,” (promoters who try to popularize music through word of mouth), Mr. Lee said. Microsoft declined to be more specific about the timing of the Zune’s introduction and did not reveal its price, saying only that it would be competitive with that of other music players. The various iPod models cost $79 to $349. Microsoft’s announcement came two days after Apple said it would sell full-length movies for download to PC’s and video iPods, and announced iPod models with more storage space and a lower starting price.» fonte: «Music Player From Microsoft Offers Wireless Song-Sharing», New York Times, By LAURIE J. Chamar-se-á Zune, é um leitor de mp3 e já é naturalmente apontado como um potencial rival do iPod da Apple. Enlace permanente.
